Multiple products: Cyclic redundancy check (CRC) failed

Symptom

During a file operation, an error message is received that mentions "cyclic redundancy check" (CRC). An example screenshot appears below.

Cause

This is a hardware error regarding reading or writing of data from/to a hard drive (or other storage medium).

Resolution

The only fix is replacement hardware. Occasionally existing files can be successfully copied to a different drive with repeated attempts, but usually the files are lost. After the hardware has been replaced, restoring the last known backup file would be the closest thing to fixing the problem.
