The WLR8950 can activate an Autosense mode to work with or without a stand.

On page 5 of the Quick Start Guide, (page 6 of the .pdf file) scan Auto-Sense Mode Enable.

If you are using the scanner with the Auto-Sense Stand, scan Magnetic Switch On. To use the scanner without the stand, scan Magnetic Switch Off.

In Auto-Sense Mode, the scan beam will be activated when the scanner detects motion, rather than manually pulling the trigger.
